Required Classroom Training
MPD currently requires concealed carry applicants to complete at least 16 hours of firearms training with an MPD-certified concealed carry training instructor.
The required instruction includes firearm safety, marksmanship, and District and federal firearms law, including DC self-defense law.
Required Range Training
DC also requires at least two hours of range training.
Current DC regulations require a 50-round qualification, fired from no farther than 15 yards, with a minimum qualifying score of 70%.

Do I need to live in Washington, DC?
No. DC regulations provide a process for non-residents to apply for a concealed carry license, subject to applicable eligibility requirements.
Many Northern Virginia students pursue DC licensing because they regularly work, commute, visit family, attend church, or conduct business in the District.
Do I need firearms experience before taking the class?
No.
Beginners are welcome.
However, because the licensing requirement includes a live-fire qualification, students who are not yet comfortable safely operating a handgun may benefit from additional skill development before qualification.
Do I need to own a handgun before applying?
MPD currently says you must either own or be in the process of purchasing a handgun to apply for a concealed carry license. MPD also allows firearm registration and the concealed carry application to be pursued together.
Is live fire required?
Yes.
DC currently requires at least two hours of range training with an MPD-certified instructor in addition to the 16-hour classroom requirement.
The qualification currently consists of 50 rounds from no farther than 15 yards with a minimum score of 70%.
Can prior military or law-enforcement training exempt me from the course?
MPD states that certain prior military, law-enforcement, or equivalent firearms training may qualify an applicant for exemptions from some firearms-training requirements.
