Virginia recognizes several ways of demonstrating handgun competency, including qualifying in-person firearms training
Maryland Wear & Carry Training
For people who need a Maryland Wear & Carry Permit for travel, work, or everyday life in Maryland.
Maryland currently requires most new applicants to complete an approved 16-hour firearms safety course that includes live-fire qualification, unless an exemption applies.
Washington, DC Concealed Carry Training
For people who live, work, worship, or regularly travel in the District.
DC currently requires applicants to complete 16 hours of firearms training plus two hours of range training with an MPD-certified instructor, subject to applicable exemptions. Training in District firearms and self-defense law remains required.

That depends largely on where you live and where you realistically need to carry.
Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC maintain separate systems. Start with the jurisdictions relevant to your actual travel and daily life.
Can one class cover Virginia, Maryland, and DC?
Some training components may overlap, but each jurisdiction has its own rules and documentation requirements.
Use the multi-state training option when you want to coordinate multiple permit-training requirements.
Does Virginia require live fire?
Virginia requires applicants to demonstrate handgun competency in person through one of several recognized methods. The statute does not require every qualifying training course to contain live fire.
TTP may still recommend or include range training depending on the course option selected.
Does Maryland require live fire?
For most non-exempt Wear & Carry applicants, yes.
Maryland currently requires an approved firearms-safety course and a live-fire qualification.
Does Washington, DC require range training?
Yes, absent an applicable exemption.
DC currently requires two hours of range training in addition to the 16-hour training requirement.
Will TTP submit my permit application for me?
No.
TTP provides training and appropriate course documentation.
The applicant remains responsible for completing the official application process with the relevant government authority.
